design studio - community hub, chicago il, spring 2024
A neighborhood so overlooked that even born-and-bred Chicagoans don’t know it, Chicago’s East Side is not found at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
This vibrant community is nestled between industrial parks and waterways on the Far South Side and harbors fascinating secrets for the historically-underserved working class communities that make Chicago work.
On Your Block proposes a firestation-turned-community hub to draw students, families, and workers to celebrate, recreate, and gather.
The project’s motive was even more simple: to draw the neighborhood, putting it on a map in a studio where the region at large rarely earned wall space at any critique.
With eight foot long drawings of the city block detailed at 1:100 scale, both the proposal and the space as it stands today earned visibility in pinups for the profession that has and will likely continue to underserve them.
